Bus to Ha Giang: Your Best Guide on How to Get There

Are you planning your unforgettable trip to the Ha Giang Loop but trying to save some bucks or got confused about the bus routes to make the most of your time? Sometimes, letting tour companies or hostels book your bus doesn’t make you feel much like a globetrotter.

Back in my backpacking days, I used to go directly to the bus stations to get the best (and official) rates. But the good thing is that everything’s changed a lot in the last few years. As the owner of PIZZA HERE, I’m constantly using the bus to Ha Giang, so just keep reading, and I will explain the best tips and ways to go. All the information I know, and that took me three years to discover, is simplified here.

Let's dive in!

Top Bus Companies to Ha Giang

First things first, let’s talk about the top picks for bus companies that will get you to Ha Giang. All of them offer a range of options from budget to luxurious. Here you find Quang Nghi, Bang Phan, and Quang Tuyen. All three of these companies provide a variety of bus options, ensuring a comfortable journey no matter your preference:

  • Sleeper Buses: Perfect for overnight trips, these buses let you lie down and catch some Zs. You basically lay down in a seat that feels like a bed.

  • Limousine Buses: These are not your average buses – think reclined seats that let you stretch out and relax. It's like flying first class, but on wheels! The only drawback is the timing: they normally depart at 6:00 am in the morning or early afternoon. Not nighttime. If your schedule is tight, you may want to use the sleeper bus option.

  • VIP Buses: For those who want a touch of luxury, these buses offer bigger beds and a bit of extra comfort to make your journey as pleasant as possible. They also run during the night.

To be completely honest, I’m always more comfortable, and less dizzy, with the budget option of a sleeper bus. Limousines are also fine if you prefer to travel seated during the daytime. I used this option a lot while my wife was pregnant. Plus, they usually drop you off closer to your requested destination. That’s a big deal. With the big buses, it’s possible they’ll drop you off at the main city bus station if you book directly.

Routes to Ha Giang and Travel Times

Hanoi to Ha Giang Bus

The journey from Hanoi to Ha Giang typically takes around 6 to 8 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. The buses usually have a stop every 3 hours for a quick bathroom break and to grab a bite – usually some tasty rice or noodles. This route usually costs between 250-300k per way, 350k if going by limousine.

Heading back to Hanoi? The return journey is just as smooth. The rates are the same as before.

Sapa to Ha Giang

For those coming from the beautiful hills of Sapa, the trip to Ha Giang takes about 7 to 9 hours. It’s a bit longer, but totally worth it! The buses also make regular stops, so you’ll have time to stretch your legs and grab some local snacks along the way. Rates for the cheapest option start from 300k.

Cat Ba to Ha Giang

This is a long journey, approximately 11 to 13 hours. But it's time-saving if done during the night (and you save money for one night at a hotel).

Booking Your Bus to Ha Giang

Booking your bus to Ha Giang is pretty straightforward. Here are a few options:

  • Direct Booking: You can book directly from the bus company’s website. Keep in mind that you'll usually need a Vietnamese-speaking person to confirm the booking. I have basic knowledge and can do it, but I wouldn't have felt confident three years ago as a traveler!

  • Hostel Booking: Ask your hostel to book the bus for you. They can arrange for the bus to pick you up right from the hostel. Don’t get nervous. They normally take a small commission, which is taken directly from the bus company, not from you. You will be paying the same price. I know this because I used to work with bus companies to book trips for people.

  • Online Platforms: Websites like 12goAsia, Baolau, Bookaway, and Vexere make booking easy. The only catch is that you'll need to go to the designated pickup/drop-off point. In Ha Giang, the common drop-off point is at Ha Giang Hostel, which is conveniently located near the bus station. If you book through one of these websites, we recommend confirming this drop-off point and booking a night at Ha Giang Hostel in advance. This way, you won’t have to worry about finding accommodation when you arrive super late at night or early in the morning. Plus, the Ha Giang Hostel owner is a friend and one of the nicest people in town.
